Huskies Drop Season Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, VA--The Bloomsburg University baseball team dropped its 2008 season opener on Thursday by a score of 6-5 to the Apprentice School at the Builders Invitational Tournament in Newport News, VA.

The Huskies fell behind 4-0 after two innings with Dory Fields hitting a three-run homer in the first inning to get the Builders going.

Bloomsburg put a run on the board in the third inning when Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/Wyalusing) walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Rich Letts (Parkesburg/Octorara).

The score stayed 4-1 in favor of the Apprentice School until the eighth inning when Matt Allen (DuBoistown/S. Williamsport) and Kirk Duffee (Coudersport/Coudersport) had back-to-back singles leading off the inning. Later, Carlos Medina (Lititz/Manheim Twp) would single in both runners to make it 4-3.

In the top of the ninth, Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) singled to lead off the inning with Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Msgn. Bonner) following with a walk. Then, on a ground ball by Letts, Donofry came around to score on a throwing error by the first baseman with Ward moving to third base and Letts safe at first. Tyler Gansner (Lancaster/Lancaster) then followed with a sac fly scoring Ward and giving the Huskies a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Builders scored twice with the winning run coming on a sac fly.

Medina was 1-3 with two RBI, while Donofry was 1-2 with a run scored. For the Apprentice School, Fields was 2-4 with three RBI.

Preston Hitchock (Wyalusing) took the loss in relief of Chace Phillips (Milton/Milton).
